Eco Ethics - Kenya has worked with a number of interns over the years from Kenya and beyond. Some have skills and qualifications in fields such as ecology, community development or IT. Others are new to environment and development and want to learn more.
Our interns often bring new ways of thinking and a different perspective into our work. In return, they gain invaluable field experience, exposure to environment and development issues on the ground, a place in a committed and skilled team, and a chance to experience life in laid back, sunny Mombasa. We can also provide supervision for Masters and PhD students undertaking fieldwork for their theses.
We have had interns from programs such as the Foundation for Sustainable Development, the Kenyan Ministry of Youth and American Field Service.
Eco Ethics - Kenya also offers tailored individual internships for non-Kenyan volunteers, including accommodation, supervision and an action plan that matches their aspirations and skills. We prioritize candidates with one or more of the following:
• Proven interest in the environment, development or community work
• Previous study in environmental science, political science, sociology, anthropology or a related field
• Openness to new cultures
• A minimum commitment of one month
Your skills and interests will be matched with the organization that provides the best opportunity for you to effectively contribute to the community.
Internships run year-round for 4 to 52 weeks, depending on your time schedule and the breadth of experience you wish to attain.
The structured program consists of several components that prepare and provide you with the support and guidance needed to implement successful projects in a sustainable manner. Your internship will involve the following elements to ensure that the work makes a lasting impact on you and the community you serve:
Orientation – You will be helped acclimate to your new surroundings and deliver essential information to ensure a safe and comfortable entry. Initially, foreign interns would stay in a hostel but then move on to a host family later on. A variety of activities and educational sessions will comprise the orientation phase, preparing you for the work ahead. For Foreign staff, Eco-Ethics provides 10 to 15 hours of basic language training during orientation (Kiswahili only). Private language tutoring is also available in all regions for a nominal fee.
Accommodation - All interns live individually (At a subsidized cost) or with host families. The accommodations should ensure your full immersion into the local language and culture while providing a chance to form relationships with an extended family and community. Many interns stay in close contact with their host families for years after completing their internship because of the bonds made during such a memorable period of their lives.
Development Training - Throughout your internship, Eco-Ethics supports you with a series of development tools to ensure the success of your project work. Initially you will learn the most pressing economic, environmental, and educational related development issues and initiatives in the local region.
In summary, the orientation program entails the following:
1. Introduction to the host family
2. Acquaintance with major points in Mombasa, this will be facilitated by a staff from Eco-Ethics.
3. Introduction to the office and staffs.
4. Induction into Eco-Ethics programs and office procedures.
5. Deployment to one of the Eco Ethics Kenya programs.
Our interns are given lots of support in their learning activities and Eco Ethics ensures that this is an enjoyable experience as well as an invaluable preparation for future roles the world over.
